A Man Called Peters

Adrian Hayter's new book (his fifth to be published) is basically a story of conflict between the human and spiritual world and the machine-dominated, impersonal world that could be developing now.

A Man Called Peters is not an easy book to classify. Some of it is fiction, set partly in the near future; there are also many exciting, factual episodes in which Hayter demonstrates his mastery of crisp, evocative writing. It is a book that challenges many of our ideas and standards, expressing with sincerity and concern the author's feelings about the present trends of Western life.

Adrian Hayter says: "Many years ago I wrote the story of a physical adventure, of sailing singlehanded from England via the Red Sea to my home in New Zealand. In that preface I emphasised that the physical adventure was only half the story, that the ship and the sea were only means to an end, and that some day I would have to write the other half 'because a half-truth may do more damage than a lie . . .'"

"This book like my previous four is autobiographical, and also a mixture of fact and fiction. I leave each reader to decide, if necessary, which is which; but to me all of it is true. The central character is my friend Peters who I hope will demonstrate what I can only express, that 'something more than total', with the help of which others may succeed where I have failed."
